One time I left Suchow
Eighteen years ago.
Human affairs,
Like shifting light,
Alter with the years,
Not to mention how youth
Changes to manhood!
I fear half the mulberry fields
Have now become oceans.
The nightingale enters the old palace
With pensive feelings.
With sparkle and shine
The flowers welcome the new envoy.
Your Governor Po still lives
To report for the present
On river and mountain.
